A Modern Guide to Living in Harmony with Natural Rhythms

Published: April 3, 2024

Have you noticed how even just a few minutes outdoors can completely change your mood? Maybe you’ve observed how the change of seasons or the moon’s phases have a noticeable impact on you, as well. To connect with nature is to be connected with ourselves.

Nature is everything. It is not a separate thing outside of us, rather it is within and around us influencing everything at all times.

Nature and everything in existence has a natural rhythm and it’s in intentionally living with this rhythm that we find resilience, vitality, and peace. Why connect with nature? The advancements of modern living may have improved our lives, yet at the expense of our vital connection with nature. Connecting with nature again will help us navigate the challenges and ailments we face today.

The Disconnect: How We Lost Touch

Why Are We Disconnected From Nature? How to Connect With Nature?

Modern lifestyles, characterized by constant screens, artificial lights, hyper-productivity, processed foods, and more, contribute to our sense of disconnection from nature and natural rhythms.

These impacts have profound negative impacts on both the individual and societal levels.

These changes have only occurred over the last two centuries, particularly since the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century. Since then, humanity has increasingly distanced itself from nature and natural rhythms.

This era marked the beginning of a shift from agrarian societies deeply intertwined with the rhythms of the earth, to urban-industrial societies largely disconnected from the natural world.

The acceleration of technological advancements in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries further deepened this rift, fundamentally altering our daily lives and our connection to the environment.

The consequences of this disconnect are stark and wide-reaching.

Feminine Shame is a deeply ingrained resistance towards that which is cyclical, fluid, nurturing, intuitive, emotional, or natural. This phenomenon, coined by InnerSpark, impacts all of us, regardless of gender. Feminine Shame is a shame towards that which is natural in a world trying to get us on board with what’s “normal” and perpetuates our disconnection from nature.

On a societal level, the loss of natural rhythms has contributed to a range of environmental and social challenges.

The shift away from nature-centric lifestyles has led to a dramatic increase in environmental degradation and lifestyles that prioritize convenience and consumption over sustainability and well-being.

This detachment from nature’s cycles has further exacerbated issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion, reflecting a broader disconnect not just from the natural world, but from the consequences of our actions on it.

On an individual level, not connecting with nature has led to a surge in physical and mental health issues.

Research indicates that people today are more prone to chronic illnesses, mental health struggles, and stress-related disorders than ever before.

Studies have shown the link between increased urbanization and the rise in mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. The disconnection from natural environments plays a significant role in this trend, as nature has been proven to have a restorative effect on mental well-being.

Furthermore, our current lifestyles often ignore the natural rhythms that dictate the optimal times for activity and rest. The consequences are evident in the widespread sleep disorders, chronic fatigue, and burnout plaguing modern society. How has the digital world impacted your connection with the natural environment?

The InnerSpark Method: Everyday Rhythms offers practical, nature-aligned strategies to address these challenges and help foster a connection with nature once more.

The Path Back to Nature

What Does It Mean to Connect with Nature & Natural Rhythms?

Connecting with nature and its natural rhythms goes far beyond simply spending time outdoors. It’s an invitation to experience the essence of the natural world in every facet of our being, enriching our lives on multiple levels.

Embracing natural rhythms brings greater contentment, fulfillment, and joy in life. There’s always something to marvel at when you’re truly experiencing the natural wonders within and around you.

To connect with nature and live natural rhythms is to acknowledge and embrace our place within the natural world, not as separate entities but as integral components of this vast, living system.

It’s recognizing that we’re literally made of soil, water, moonbeams, stardust, and seawater, and so is everything and everyone around us. This connection feeds our soul, offering a sense of completeness and belonging that modern life often fails to provide.

Living Natural Rhythms is the Antidote For Modern Ailments

Nature’s Healing Power on the Mind: Why is Connecting with Nature Important for Mental Health?

Ancient wisdom and modern research consistently say that spending time connecting with nature can lead to a remarkable range of benefits. These include reduced anxiety, depression, and stress levels. Nature acts as a calming force, helping to clear the mind and reduce the constant buzz of modern life.

Additionally, connecting with nature helps to soothe our emotional wounds and replenishes our joy, fostering a sense of inner peace. Connecting with natural rhythms is a profound way to support us in healing what I refer to as “The Big-3 Resilience Zappers” of stress, trauma, and shame.

Nature, with its inherent rhythms of growth, decay, and renewal, mirrors the cycles of our own lives, teaching us resilience and the beauty of transformation. How have you experienced firsthand the restorative effects of nature on your mental health?

Connecting With Nature to Reduce Stress

Exposure to natural environments directly influences our stress response system. By lowering cortisol levels and reducing blood pressure, nature helps us transition from the body’s stress-induced “fight or flight” mode to a state of calmness and relaxation. This shift is crucial for mental health recovery and resilience building. Have you ever noticed how your mood shifts after spending time outdoors, even if it’s just a few minutes?

Living with nature’s rhythms means aligning our daily lives with the cycle of the seasons, the ebb and flow of the tide, and the waxing and waning of the moon. It’s about tuning into the subtle cues that nature provides and adjusting our activities, rest, and food accordingly. This alignment promotes a deeper understanding of the natural forces at play in our own bodies and the world around us, leading to a more balanced and harmonious existence. This is why connecting with nature is so important!

We aren’t meant to be stressed all the time. Our natural state is peace.

The gifts of intertwining our lives with nature are abundant and transformative, touching every part of our being. Embracing nature leads to significantly improved sleep quality, a decrease in stress hormones, and enhancements in mood and mental clarity, fostering feelings of joy, peace, and overall well-being. This is a way of living rooted in the wisdom of the ages, echoing the core teachings of The InnerSpark Method: Everyday Rhythms program.

Practical Steps to Reconnect

Ways to Connect With Nature & Natural Rhythms For Busy, Modern Lives

Amid our bustling modern existence, connecting with nature and its rhythms might seem like a daunting task. Yet, it’s simpler and more crucial than ever. How to connect with nature? Here are tailored suggestions, drawn from The InnerSpark Method, to infuse your daily life with the essence of the natural world:

  • Embrace Daily Outside Time: Commit to spending time outside for at least 20 minutes a day. This could mean going for a walk, sitting on a bench, visiting a park, walking the dog, playing with the kids, anything!
  • Feed Your Senses: Practice engaging with your senses every time you’re outside. Observe the colors, textures, sounds, and smells. This practice of mindfulness and intentionally feeding your senses with natural input has immediate impacts on your physical, emotional, and mental health.
  • Bring Nature Indoors: Fill your living and working spaces with plants, natural materials (crystals are fantastic), and even sounds from the natural world (a small indoor water feature, ocean sounds, etc.)
  • Practice Seasonal Living: Aligning your diet and activities with the shifting seasons nourishes your body in harmony with nature’s blueprint. This principle of seasonal living is a key aspect of The InnerSpark Method, enhancing both health and well-being by journeying with the sacred spiral of life within and around us.
  • Follow the Sun: Observing the sun’s journey across the sky not only connects us with the natural world but also aligns our internal clocks with the earth’s rhythms. Endeavor to structure your daily activities in alignment with the day’s different energies. For example, the evening isn’t a time for tasks that require focus. Eating a very large dinner isn’t supportive of the energy of deep sleep.
  • Cultivate Consistency: Establishing a regular sleep and wake schedule and consistent mealtimes in alignment with daily rhythms are arguably the most health-supportive practices you can do! This harmonizes our body’s rhythms with those of nature leading to improvements in all areas of our lives.
  • Garden, Regardless of Space: Whether you have sprawling lands or a small windowsill, there’s space to plant something! Growing things connects you to nature and the cycle of life and growth, plus there’s nothing like observing the miracle of nature in action!
  • Celebrate Natural Transitions: Observing and celebrating changes in nature, from seasonal shifts to the phases of the moon, deepens our connection to nature and the world and our place within it. Doing the same for ourselves and the seasons of our lives and bodies is also a beautiful practice.

Adopting these practices doesn’t require monumental changes; rather, it’s the small, mindful steps that lead to significant transformations. By engaging with the natural world in these intentional ways, you not only foster a deeper connection with yourself but also tap into a wellspring of resilience, vitality, and peace.

This journey of connection with nature and natural living is what The InnerSpark Method: Everyday Rhythms aims to cultivate—a life lived in profound harmony with the natural rhythms that govern all of life.

Reflective Journey: Questions to Ponder

Connecting With Nature Journal Questions:

  • How does spending time in nature make you feel?
  • In what ways can you align your daily routines more closely with natural cycles?
  • What are the biggest challenges or barriers that prevent you from connecting with nature more regularly? Reflect on practical steps you can take to overcome these barriers.
  • What simple, daily practice could you introduce into your routine to bring you closer to nature, even in a small way?
  • Imagine a day lived entirely in harmony with your natural rhythms. What does this look like for you? Describe this day in detail, from waking to resting, and consider what steps you can take to make this vision a reality.
  • Nature continuously cycles through phases of growth, bloom, decay, and rebirth. How do you see this cycle mirrored in your own life? Reflect on what you can learn from nature’s resilience and adaptability.
