Hello everyone, welcome to another Wednesday Wisdom, today we’re diving deep into a topic that I know many of you grapple with: the intense emotional roller coaster that comes with being highly sensitive.
Some days, it may feel like you’re on an emotional whirlwind, tossed around by high and low tides that come on swiftly and powerfully. It’s exhausting and disorienting, and sometimes it can feel like it’s just too much.
Today we’ll get into how and why this happens and some things we can do to find a sense of relief.
Hello! OK! So back to our emotional tides.
For starters, high sensitivity is a gift. Let’s start right there. Its benefits outweigh any challenges that come along with it. Additionally, high sensitivity only feels problematic when it’s misunderstood and not being managed properly.
Being highly sensitive isn’t just about experiencing the world more intensely—it’s about feeling the world more intensely, too.
Happiness, sadness, love, fear, these aren’t just emotions for us. They’re all-encompassing experiences that can leave us feeling emotionally drained and overwhelmed.
In addition to that, when high sensitivity isn’t being properly managed and a highly sensitive individual doesn’t have practices in place for boundaries, they may also have a hard time distinguishing their emotions from those around them and find themselves feeling FOR others, rather than WITH them. This only adds to the intensity and highs and lows!
When we’re constantly riding this emotional roller coaster, it impacts everything.
It can affect our relationships, as we may react more strongly to situations that others shrug off. It can affect our mental health, making us more susceptible to stress and anxiety.
It can impact our bodies and lead to all kinds of symptoms and ailments. And it can affect our overall sense of well being, as we may struggle to find emotional balance.
So what can we do? You definitely don’t have to remain a passenger on this roller coaster – unless you like it.
Imagine if you could start developing healthier emotional habits, like taking a moment to breathe and center yourself when you feel an intense emotion bubbling up.
Imagine if you could create a solid foundation of self-care that supports you in building resilience daily so you may easily you recharge your emotional batteries.
Let yourself feel, using and trusting your physical body as the grounding anchor in the choppy seas. The body is the container for our experience and through it, we may find smooth emotional flow to let the energies process and shift as they’re intended – just like ocean waves.
Breathing deeply, tuning into the physical experience of your body, and trusting the tides are fabulous resources to support the flow.
Healthy and ease-full emotional flow is possible, and absolutely necessary in order to thrive and transform high sensitivity into a superpower. So many of us are living with the untapped potential of this gift we’ve been given!
Emotions are teachers and guides, not things to rule our lives, be ashamed of, suppress, or get swept away by.
