Let’s talk about social media and device usage as a sensitive, deep-feeling person and how it relates to your health, particularly your nervous system and digestive system.
I asked you recently what your experiences are with social media and most of you confessed to being pretty attached and checking devices first thing in the morning.
The thing is, it IS a helpful tool, and if a little is good, more isn’t necessarily always better…
We desire social connections and for many, devices are our main, or even sole source of connections, which isn’t a bad thing, however, we must moderate the use for our overall health and well-being.
So, let’s talk specifically about how social media particularly impacts sensitive, deep-feelers and some things to consider.
Screens excite all nervous systems, but especially the sensitive ones.
Every single thing we receive through the senses must be digested, this includes all we’re bombarded with through social media.
This excess input excites the nervous system and makes us even more prone to feelings of anxiety, frustration, exhaustion, poor sleep, emotional instability, and physical health problems.
We only have so much energy to use in our energetic bank accounts each day, and if we’re trying to digest the natural parts of our lives, plus all the input and sensory assault that is on our devices, it’s no wonder there’s little energy left over for healing and life in general. It’s no wonder we’re experiencing cycles of burnout.
Most sensitive, deep-feelers have physical symptoms associated with their digestive system, and it’s so important to remember that digestion is so much more than transforming the food we eat into our body. It’s digesting emotions, sensory inputs, experiences, and more.
If you’re a sensitive, deep-feeling person who is having challenges with their nervous system and things like anxiety, exhaustion, as well as other physical health symptoms like digestion, hormonal imbalances, aches, difficulty sleeping, etc. establishing some boundaries around screen usage could work wonders for you!
Begin by looking at cause and effect – when you do x, you get y. When you consume media through your devices, then you feel, how? Begin investigating and really observing what happens.
Ask yourself What are you doing? Why are you feeling compelled to engage with devices? What are you seeking? What are other ways of feeding this need?
Lastly, set boundaries, have specific purposes for using it when you’re using it. Be compassionate and gentle when setting new habits and know it can take some time to establish new ways of being.
