What Is Ayurveda (Really)? And Why It’s More Relevant Than Ever

Published: July 21, 2025

In a world overflowing with wellness trends, dosha quizzes, food charts, and conflicting advice, it’s easy to feel like Ayurveda is just another lifestyle to perfect; another “should” in an already overwhelming list of rules.

But here’s the truth: Ayurveda isn’t here to complicate your life. It’s here to simplify it, bring you home, and remind you who and what you really are.

Ayurveda isn’t about memorizing Sanskrit terms or following someone else’s morning routine. It’s not about eating “perfectly,” knowing your prakriti, or oiling your body at 6:00am on the dot.

Ayurveda is about relationship, rhythm, and remembering. Let’s explore what this ancient science truly is, and why it’s more relevant now than ever before.

Ayurveda Isn’t About Rules. It’s About Relationship

Let’s start by clearing the air. Most people hear the word “Ayurveda” and think:

  • Long lists of “yes” and “no” foods
  • Rigid daily routines
  • Complicated herbal protocols
  • Strict rules about doshas
  • Or that it’s somehow a religion

Ayurveda literally means “the science of life.” It’s a 5,000+ year-old system of wisdom that teaches us how to live in relationship with ourselves, with Nature, and with life itself.

It’s not about fixing yourself, it’s about knowing yourself. It’s not about doing it “right” — it’s about living in right relationship.

You Are a Microcosm of the Macrocosm

Ayurveda teaches that everything in existence (including you) is made of the same five elements:
Earth
Water
Fire
Air
Ether (Space)

You’re a unique expression of these elements, your own one-of-a-kind blend. That’s why you’re you.

And health, from an Ayurvedic perspective, is simply the state in which your unique blend of elements is in balance.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. What works for you won’t necessarily work for your friend. What nourishes you in one season may deplete you in another.

That’s the brilliance of this system: it honors your uniqueness while anchoring you into something universal.

Ayurveda Is a Path of Rhythm

At its heart, Ayurveda is about rhythm.

Rhythm with:

  • The sun and moon
  • The seasons of nature
  • The seasons of your life
  • Your breath, digestion, energy, and emotions

When we live in rhythm, we thrive. When we fall out of rhythm, when we disconnect, dis-ease begins.

Ayurveda doesn’t shame or punish. It helps you notice the patterns, gently come back to balance, and take full ownership of your well-being with compassion and clarity.

This is a system of radical self-awareness and radical self-responsibility. It’s not about arbitrary rules, it’s about observing cause and effect, and choosing alignment.

True Health Is Wholeness

In modern medicine, health is often reduced to isolated symptoms and parts. Mind over here. Body over there.

But Ayurveda knows better.

This is a holistic system that knows and honors how:

  • Your breath affects your sleep.
  • Your thoughts affect your gut.
  • Your emotions impact your immunity.
  • Your experiences, what you consume through all five senses, shape your entire being.

Your psychology and physiology are inseparable. And when there’s disconnection from your true nature, it sets off a ripple effect.

First, we disconnect.
Then, disturbance builds.
Then, function breaks down.
Then, dis-ease appears.

But when we learn to listen and know ourselves from within, we can catch imbalance and make adjustments. Symptoms become sacred messengers, not enemies to suppress, but invitations to realign.

Ayurveda Simplifies Life

Ayurveda can feel overwhelming at first, but that’s only because we’ve been conditioned to live in disconnection.

This isn’t a system that asks you to do more. In fact, it often asks you to do less and to simply focus on what actually works.

Ayurveda teaches you to:

  • Nourish your real body with real food
  • Move and rest in ways that match your energy and the season
  • Make decisions that honor your truth
  • Know your patterns and work with them, not against them

Life feels harder when we’re not well physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. Ayurveda helps you return to your natural state: Grounded. Energized. Clear. Capable. Nourished. At home in your own skin.

How to Live Ayurveda: The Five Essentials

You don’t need a certification to live Ayurveda. You don’t need to “master” anything.

Start with these five daily rhythms:

  1. Real Nourishment — with food, beauty, and information
  2. Deep Rest — not just sleep, but actual restoration
  3. Intentional Breath — awareness of your life force
  4. Joyful Movement — celebration and expression
  5. Self-Reflection + Energy Awareness — staying present with yourself

Tending to these five areas with softness, rhythm, and self-honoring, creates the foundation for true health and wholeness.

Why Ayurveda Is More Relevant Than Ever

We live in a time of unprecedented disconnection. Artificial food. Artificial light. Artificial connection. Chronic stress. Burnout. Overload.

And more than ever, we need something real.

Ayurveda brings us back to what’s real, simple, and true. It reminds us that health is not a destination, rather it’s an ongoing relationship with ourselves, with nature, and with life itself.

“Compost is proof that decay is generous.” Life, in all its seasons, asks us to become composters of experience. Every difficulty, every ache, every dis-ease — physical, emotional, or ancestral — holds within it an invitation: to return to Source, to end what has completed its purpose, and to begin again with clearer light. Hi, I’m Devon.
I’m not here to help you “fix” yourself. (You’re not broken). I’m here to help you return to yourself and to what’s real, sustainable, and deeply nourishing.

For most of my life, I was disconnected from myself, though I couldn’t have named it at the time. I felt unwell, insecure, and unsure how to actually feel OK in my own skin.
I thought all the health problems, anxiety, exhaustion, and sense of not-quite-rightness were just “normal.”

What changed everything was rhythm.
A redefinition of self-care.
A remembrance of Nature’s wisdom.
Daily rhythm. Seasonal rhythm. Soul-deep rhythm.
Rooted in Nature. Rooted in truth.

Now, it’s my deepest honor to guide others in rebuilding their lives from that same foundation.

Drawing on a background in Integrative Health, Ayurveda, holistic coaching, somatic trauma work, energy healing, and flower essence therapy, my approach is gentle, grounded, and deeply supportive.

Through The InnerSpark Method, I help people simplify, reconnect with what matters, and create sustainable rhythms of self-care that support real energy, real joy, and real healing at the root.
