A Guide On Highly Sensitive, Intuitive, Empathic Souls

What Does it Mean to be Sensitive?

Words like “sensitive,” “intuitive,” and “empath” seem to be gaining in popularity recently and rightfully so! This small segment of the population possesses many magical attributes that are needed nowadays more than ever.

A highly sensitive person differs from simply having the quality of sensitivity or empathy. While humans at their core, in my opinion, are inherently loving and good and possess qualities of empathy and compassion, a highly sensitive person goes beyond simply possessing a quality. A highly sensitive person’s entire system on all levels – physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and energetically – is just completely different.

Highly sensitive people, and to a certain degree the other introverted, intuitive, empathic types, simply have highly sensitive nervous systems that require a simpler, slower, Nature-based way of living to safeguard their energy and health.

What are the differences between highly sensitive people and…?

In all honesty, I find labels to be limiting, self-fulfilling, and at times, less helpful than not. The labels of “highly sensitive person,” “introvert,” “empath,” etc. can be helpful for people to learn more about themselves and the needs of their bodies and energy systems. Beyond that, I think it’s imperative to remember that all humxn beings are innately highly sensitive. It’s our nature.

As we move farther away from a more Nature-based way of living, many of us are simply numbed and disconnected. Those of us whose highly sensitive systems scream at us are blessed. We simply can’t tolerate a modern world’s hurried ways and through self-knowledge, we can be the desperately-needed change agents.

Roots of Sensitivity: What causes a person to be highly sensitive?

There are many reasons why someone is a highly sensitive person, and it is believed that we are simply born this way. However, many times the extent to which our traits develop and whether or not we’re able to view them as gifts stems from early life trauma. Our heightened sensory abilities, innate to each human, were hyper-aroused in response to trauma and therefore, developed more keenly. However, these abilities, the gifts of sensitivity, are meant to be used for creative, healing, magic-making purposes. What are the signs of a highly sensitive person? How do you know if you are a highly sensitive person?  If you’ve ever been shamed for your emotions, feel like you see everything, are bothered more by sounds, smells, certain media, etc. than those around you, been projected upon for speaking truth and addressing elephants in the room, or have a deep well of love and compassion in your heart that longs to be expressed, read on, babe.

  • A highly sensitive person feels drained and overwhelmed in crowds, loud environments, and very stimulating situations – sometimes even if they’re only experiencing it through a screen.
  • A highly sensitive person is often quite intolerant of stimulants such as caffeine, sugar, nicotine, and the like.
  • A highly sensitive person is incredibly creative and feels deeply connected to artful expressions.
  • A highly sensitive person can “read” another like a book and pick up on the subtlest cues about their current state through their body language, facial expressions, voice tones, etc.
  • A highly sensitive person often feels quite spiritual and more comfortable in the liminal or “otherworlds” than they do in the physical, Earthly world.
  • A highly sensitive person often struggles with anxiety and physical health challenges such as autoimmune disorders, hormonal imbalances, digestive disturbances, and “mystery symptoms” that involve physical discomfort and pain.
  • A highly sensitive person feels incredibly deeply and finds themselves getting very involved in situations outside of themselves due to weak boundaries.
  • A highly sensitive person often feels overwhelmed by many stimuli happening simultaneously. A gathering of people conversing while simultaneously watching television and listening to music is their idea of hell.
  • A highly sensitive person can feel impacted by others’ moods.
  • A highly sensitive person has heightened sensory perceptions, meaning that some or all of their physical senses are picking up signals and cues more frequently.
  • A highly sensitive person feels things – emotions, energies, weather changes, arrangements of items in a room, EMFs from electronics, etc. – so deeply that they have visceral reactions.
  • A highly sensitive person cannot consume certain types of media because the imprints from these will also create unfavorable conditions in their system. Violent images may stick with them for days or appear in dreams, for example.
  • Due to heightened senses, they may experience highly sensitive hearing and they may be highly sensitive to music, highly sensitive to sound, and highly sensitive to noise and manage their environment as best they can and know that ear buds, noice canceling headphones, etc. can work wonders!
  • They may be highly sensitive to smells, especially chemicals and other synthetic materials. Learning to make personal care and cleaning products can help many reactions, is more cost-effective, and is much friendlier for the Earth.
  • A highly sensitive mind can mean trouble sleeping, trouble settling, overthinking and over analyzing. Practices like meditation, yin and restorative yoga, time away from electronics, time in nature, and exercise can soothe the mind.

What are the challenges and gifts?

Combine having this incredibly porous system with living in a culture that shames sensitivity, this population is more prone to challenges. Physical health challenges, anxiety, settling for mediocrity, staying small and quiet, not living one’s dreams and potential, and more can plague the sensitive. However, that doesn’t have to be your fate.

Feminine Shame + High Sensitivity

Highly sensitive, introverted, empathic people come in all shapes and sizes, of every culture, background, class, race, ethnicity, or gender. This trait is certainly more “feminine” (in my work, referred to as the Spiral Principle), which makes it more of a target for shaming and ridicule. The collective doesn’t necessarily want to face its gross misuse of vitality and face that fact that our unnatural ways of living are taking its toll on all beings and the Earth, too. How to Strengthen The Highly Sensitive Person

You are the way you are for a very special, specific purpose. It’s time to rise. Every single trait about you is a gift and rather than falling into the shame and resentment trap and trying to “fix” yourself and get the sensitivity out, I invite you to work with these qualities as gifts.

Nature

Sensitive souls are more connected to Nature and require it for proper maintenance and clarity. Connecting to Nature and using her medicines through a variety of ways is non-negotiable.

Identify and heal the roots of what makes being a highly sensitive hard – feminine shame.

Spiral + Triangle Energy

Let go of any notions around gender or “masculine” and “feminine” and recognize the uniqueness of you, without society’s input. Womxn get shamed for being “hysterical” and men get shamed for being “too girly” when either are being their highly sensitive selves. Redefine.

Shadow Work

We resist parts of ourselves (like our sensitivity) because of deep programming and/or childhood or ancestral traumas. Addressing these layers and peeling away untruths is the way towards embodying sensitivity with reverence and purpose, and Shadow Work offers us an avenue.

Intuitive Energy Healing

Develop your own intuitive energy healing practices and strengthen your boundaries, feel more grounded, and become the clear channel you are meant to be.

Holistic Healing

Know the options you have for yourself when addressing anything in your life that needs healing – your physical body, your relationships, your mind, etc. Sometimes opting for more Nature-based, holistic options can yield better results for highly sensitive people.

Embodiment

What’s in a title?

I get asked frequently, “What is a holistic life coach?“What do you mean by mentoring and consulting?” “What exactly do holistic wellness coaches do?”

And I totally get it.

In an era where anyone with an internet connection can create a job and a title for themself, it can leave many of us wary and skeptical. Many of us may have had negative experiences with coaches, mentors, or consultants. Some practitioners may call themselves one thing, and their work differs from another using the same title.

While I can’t speak for everyone, this guide serves to provide an overview of definitions from the perspective of how I practice. When it comes to the labels I’ve chosen, I’ve done my best to adequately describe my work and convey the breadth and depth of passion and experience I bring to each of my clients.

My purpose is activating the sensitive soul.

My highest joy is holding space for you to remember how to trust your body, live in alignment with nature and seasonal flow, spiral with the Wheel of Frequencies and the Eight Cosmic Archetypes that make up your inner wisdom council, befriend your subtle energies, and transmute trauma into gifts and purpose.

As a Coach, Mentor, and Consultant, I bring a magical, potent medicine bag to you, sensitive soul! And, as a highly sensitive, introverted, INFJ myself, believe me I get it. Learn more about me and my story.

Here are some answers to your questions, Dear One!

What is a coach?

The dictionary defines a coach as, “an athletic instructor or trainer,” and “a tutor who gives private or specialized teaching.” While this may be true for some “coaches,” it doesn’t accurately describe my work.

I wear many hats, including that of the mentor and consultant, and when called and necessary, can offer this to you to support your process. A little secret: I’ve never loved the title “coach” as I feel it’s initially misleading (I can’t help you with your baseball swing and it’s been a while since I’ve played basketball) and doesn’t fully explain my work even when used and understood even in its more modern applications.

A coach, to me, is someone who partners with you and supports you in hearing your own innate wisdom. This empowers you to become your own best teacher, healer, problem solver, etc. As a coach, I honor your autonomy, encourage your unique perspective, and see you as whole and capable.

What is a mentor?

The dictionary defines a mentor as, “An experienced and trusted adviser.” I lovingly bring my experiences and advisement to the table only when and if they’re relevant to you. I never see myself as “above” you or as possessing some kind of special insight, wisdom or answer.

I find many “coaches” put themselves in the driver’s seat, lead sessions, talk more than they listen, and try to “fix” the client. You do not need fixing, my love, because there’s nothing wrong with you. When my mentor hat goes on, I make it known that I am sharing insight and experiences from relevant, similar experiences, and/or from knowledge or expertise from my many years studying a variety of modalities.

What is a consultant?

The dictionary defines a consultant as, “A person who provides expert advice professionally.” To me, a consultant is an expert in something, providing counsel or advice in a particular area. Drawing on my robust background and expertise in a variety of wellness- and spirituality-based areas, I know the tremendous value I bring to my clients and am always open to offering it – when and if the situation necessitates and the client is in need.

Whether through The Library, courses, or in my one on one work, when a highly sensitive, introverted soul is seeking something in their life and desires a perspective and some information, I am happy to share!

A mentor may do the same, however, the best mentors have also walked the path you are on, have been in similar situations, have overcome similar obstacles, etc. I bring both to my highly sensitive, introverted clients as they navigate the challenges of life, healing, wellness, and spirituality.

What do you mean by “holistic”?

Holistic,” while a buzzword, is a concept about which I am incredibly passionate. To look at something holistically is to view it in its entirety wherein each part is given equal attention, focus, weight, and analysis. For example, in healing our bodies, addressing symptoms as if they’re the “problem” reduces our interwoven parts to separate pieces. However, nothing is separate! Struggling with finding purpose in your life? That’s just a symptom yet again and not the actual root of the challenge you’re experiencing.

It’s my mission and my role as a Holistic Coach + Mentor to guide you towards a more integrated way of being.

I honor and recognize you as the expert of your life and my role is to walk with you, hold sacred space, and support you in hearing yourself.
 
As a coach honoring your sovereignty and individual process, I never seek to lead you or guide you anywhere outside of yourself. You are always in the driver’s seat with me. Ensuring you feel safe and supported are of utmost importance. As I may put on a different hat and switch roles, I don’t share opinions, guidance, support, etc. unless there’s consent from you and it’s relevant.

I guide you in integrating and healing all aspects of your being – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Through beginning to understand and feel that the “subtle creates the gross,” you become more empowered and sovereign and able to see the interconnected nature of your being. You live in a more holistic way broadening your perspective. Your shadows become your treasures and your sensitivity becomes your most beloved superpower.

My highest passion in the realm of transformation is reminding you of your own innate power to heal and create change. I help you receive the vision you truly hold for yourself and your life. I help you break through any illusions of doubt or stories to give yourself permission to create that life to embody your ideal self. I help you bridge the gap between who you currently are and who you’re becoming. I am right there with you, walking beside you and am fiercely dedicated to walking my talk, as well.

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

While they can be very complementary, there are differences. Therapy tends to be very retrospectively and emotionally focused. While coaching and mentoring does look to the past and offers emotional support, much is geared towards claiming radical self-responsibility for the present and working towards creating the future. It supports you in leveraging the gifts you possess – right here and now, sensitive soul!

My Qualifications

As a voracious learner (and lover of holistic healing), I continue to joyously explore and expand my skill set, certifications, and studies along the way, and my journey has led me to many magical places including completing my MS in Nutrition & Integrative Health from Maryland University of Integrative Health, a Registered Yoga Teacher certification, a Flower Essence Therapy certification, Energy Healing certification, and a Meditation and Pranayama (breath practice) certification. I studied coaching with The Wisdom of the Whole Academy. And I study Ayurveda with Hale Pule Ayurveda & Yoga. In addition to my own embodied life experiences, which are my greatest teachers, I also extensively study the fields of shame and trauma, shadow work, shamanism, embodiment and expressive arts, chakra and endocrine system balancing, and more.

I study and learn because not only am I passionately obsessed with your process, I am also dedicated daily to my own! I truly walk my talk. I’m passionate about sharing all of this with you.
