Holistic Nutrition

It continually fascinates me how humans are literally addicted to food. And how what is meant to be our nourishment is the source of so much shame. We source identities through diet protocols. We place morality on whether or not our food choices were “good” or “bad.” We plan, fixate, obsess, overeat, under eat; we subside on food-like stuff that is made in a lab and many people can’t identify vegetables beyond cheeseburger toppings. We spend so much time and money on fads, trends, and supplements yet we can’t seem to agree upon the “ideal human diet.”

But why? What is the main intention behind this fear-driven behavior? We have lost our connection with our innate ability to feed ourselves on all levels, and we have forgotten the true meaning of the word “nutrition.”

Some journal prompts for your use:
What does nourishment mean to me?

What’s my relationship with food?

How do I feel about my diet?

Do I eat in a way that truly nourishes me or do I eat out of convenience, habit, based on trends, etc?

How’s my physical digestion?

Am I experiencing any physical digestive woes and if so, what can I draw about my energetic state?

What’s the underlying message here and what’s the need?

What Nutrition Really Is

Nutrition must be thought of as a holistic concept that includes all we take in through the senses, which is so much more than the food we put into our mouths. Like food, these inputs can be of a high quality, supportive nature, or they can be toxic and poisonous to the system.

As the subtle creates the gross, these inputs are creating your body, your life, your physical experience on Earth. What people are you around? What media are you consuming? It’s imperative to do a self-audit regularly and to check in with the four levels to assess your current nutritional state. Learn more about Energy Healing.

The thing to really keep in mind is that all that we take in must be digested. Digestion is so much more than the food’s journey from mouth to anus. All that you receive through your senses must be digested. Think of all you receive through your senses on a daily basis… It is mind blowing! So much of that is involuntary, yes, and, how are you moderating and discerning the rest? Do you really taste? Do you allow yourself to receive the sights of natural beauty? Do you listen to the gentle rise and fall of your own sweet breath?

Mind your senses. Give them the space to feel, integrate, process, and assimilate. If you struggle with digestion, then all the protocols and herbs won’t help as much as minding your sensory nourishment. The best way to detox the sensorial body? Slow down. Feel. Rest.

Caring For The Senses

The suggestions below are a few of my favorite. They serve to nourish the physical sense, as well as the energetic layer associated with the sense. For example, oiling the skin is so supportive of the physical skin and also serves as a layer of protection from the energetic outside world.

Smell: Avoiding overwhelming odors from chemicals and synthetic materials, as well as personal care products and perfumes, oil the nose, neti

Taste: Tongue scraping, getting the six main tastes in your meal, keeping your mouth alkaline

Sight: Protect your eyes from technology with blue light blocking glasses, let some sun on your eyes (especially the first 90 minutes after sunrise), mist rosewater on your face and over your eyes to reduce eye strain

Sound: Avoid overwhelming and loud sounds, keep a soothing environment with calming, pleasing sounds you love, oil the ears

Touch: Favor fabrics that you love, protect the skin and keep it supple with oil massage, get sunlight

Real Foods & Earth Connection

I am not here to preach a particular way of eating. I believe that all sides can be argued, every person is different on all levels, and that “research” can be skewed depending upon who’s holding the purse. I also believe that you know what is best for you and may have simply forgotten how to hear your body over the loud dogma.

The one thing I can absolutely say for certain is that all humans can benefit from eating foods their body actually recognizes and can use – such as anything that grows out of the sacred soils.

Consuming food that is designed for your body because it’s made of the same elements as you serves as a way to connect with everything – Spirit, the seasons, the Earth. There’s a finite amount of elements on the planet that exist in a natural way. The Earth’s intelligence cannot even begin to be questioned and your body holds the same cellular intelligence and materials found on Earth. The best way to support your body? Eat of the Earth!

Creating Food Freedom

Mindful eating helps us to establish a baseline for the sensorial experience of the foods we receive. As we slow down and feel what’s happening when we ingest something, we can also notice its impact on us. Ultimately, this leads us to a more intuitive and harmonious way of nourishing ourselves.

Seasonal living is a way to enrich that baseline experience through aligning with our intuitive nature. What supports you in summer may not provide the same benefits in winter. It sounds obvious, yet when you think about how many people are eating the same things day-in and day-out, you’ll realize how much we alienate ourselves from the cycles and rhythms of Nature. These external cycles and rhythms are no different than our internal ones!

Food Addiction, Shadow Work,
and Core Wound Alchemy

Struggling with unhealthy behaviors in an attempt to self-soothe such as binge eating and emotional eating signifies unprocessed experiences in our subtle and energetic levels. Trauma, emotions, and events (even seemingly small ones) compound over time. These experiences form our core wounds. As the subtle creates the gross, these subtle core wounds have the power to shape our physical experience and manifest dis-ease in our daily lives. The wisdom we seek truly resides in our shadows, which is why shadow work is the most profound healing we can do!

The stories we tell ourselves are not written in stone however, and we have the power to transmute our core wounds into purpose, freedom, wisdom, and so much more. This transmutation process is how I work within myself and with my clients every single day, and it truly is magical.

You are meant to thrive, feel nourished, and live without shame!
