Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of healing and living that originated in the Indus Valley region. Rooted in nature, it is based on the wisdom of the elements and qualities of the natural world. Because Ayurveda is grounded in the unchanging truths of nature, it is applicable to anyone, at any time, anywhere.
In today’s disconnected lifestyles, Ayurveda is more relevant than ever, offering a way to address the root causes of disease rather than just symptoms, and seeing each person as a holistic, multifaceted, and unique being.
When it comes to food and health, Ayurveda offers a holistic approach that goes beyond the trendy diets and restrictive rules that have become so popular these days.
For starters, Ayurveda is not a diet. It’s a way of living that aligns with the rhythms and wisdom of nature and your unique constitution. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution and offering blanket guidance can often do more harm than good.
The real power of Ayurveda comes from working one-on-one with a knowledgeable guide to understand your unique needs and tendencies, and then to actually practice and embody its wisdom with some simple, natural practices.
The Core Principle: Agni Is Everything
In Ayurveda, digestion is central to overall well-being. Your agni, or digestive fire, is responsible not only for breaking down food, but also for processing experiences, emotions, and life itself.
When agni is strong, you feel energized, clear, and balanced. When it’s weak, we’re more likely to develop symptoms and diseases. According to Ayurveda the source of ill physical, emotional, and mental health begins with poor digestion. Whether it’s issues like bloating, fatigue, anxiety, hormonal imbalances, poor sleep, chronic pain, poor immunity, brain fog, and more, we look to the digestion.
Ayurvedic Principles in Action
Ayurvedic principles may be applied to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Even different cuisines from around the world may all become “Ayurvedic.” Ayurveda emphasizes the “how” when it comes to eating – how we do it and how the food impacts our agni.
- Like increases like; opposites bring balance. If you feel overheated and restless, cooling, grounding foods help. If you’re sluggish, warm and stimulating foods can invigorate you.
- Prioritize agni. The focus should always be on keeping your digestion strong and balanced rather than fixating on specific foods.
- Real food is of nature. Simple, real, seasonal foods support digestion and overall well-being. Complex combinations of foods, for example, are discouraged.
Rather than being some external arbitrary system of “rules,” Ayurveda invites us into the practice of observing the law of cause and effect. How do different foods impact us? When we do X, and we get Y, do we like Y? If so, great, keep going! If not, we’re invited to change the cause and have a different effect or experience of life.
Foundational Ayurvedic Eating Guidelines
Ayurveda offers time-tested (it’s been around for 5,000 years, after all), practical approaches to support digestion and nourish the body in alignment with nature. These are not rigid rules but gentle guidelines to support your well-being:
- Balance the six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent) in each meal to create harmony in the body.
- Eat three meals a day, no snacks. This allows your digestive system to fully process each meal and reset before the next one, ensuring metabolic wastes, or ama, don’t accumulate and begin the disease process.
- Chew each bite to liquid mush. Digestion starts in the mouth, and chewing thoroughly prepares your stomach for optimal digestion.
- Eat without distractions. Savor your food with gratitude and reverence, allowing your body to fully receive nourishment.
- Avoid cold or raw foods and drinks. They can dampen your digestive fire and weaken agni over time.
- Say no to leftovers. Freshly prepared meals carry prana (life force) and are easier to digest.
- Walk after meals. A gentle stroll aids digestion and supports circulation.
- Honor your first burp. It’s your body’s natural signal that you’re satisfied for now and can no longer handle any additional food or drink at that time.
- Eat portions that fit within your two cupped hands. This ensures you’re eating an amount that’s digestible and appropriate for your unique body.
- Follow a 60:40 ratio of building to extractive foods in each meal. Building foods (grains, root vegetables, healthy fats) nourish and sustain the physical body, while extractive foods (most vegetables, legumes, nuts, and meat) are harder to digest.
A Personal Journey: Overcoming Health Challenges with Ayurveda
For years, I struggled with a dysfunctional relationship with food, disordered eating patterns, hormonal imbalances, and adult acne. I felt disconnected from my body and overwhelmed by the constant search for the “right” way to eat. Ayurveda helped me understand that my body is unique and that by tuning into its needs and following simple, natural practices, I could reclaim my health and well-being.
By focusing on strengthening my agni, adopting mindful eating habits, and honoring the natural rhythms of life, I experienced profound changes: my skin cleared, my energy stabilized, and I felt a newfound sense of resilience and joy.
Ayurveda Is a Personal Journey
Ayurveda is a lifelong journey of self-discovery, not a rigid set of external rules. It emphasizes the power of our body’s innate ability to find balance and heal itself.
